Auditorium History

In 1927, the Graveraet High School opened its doors for all of Marquette to see!   Kaufman Auditorium, the historic Castle-like buildings most prized treasure, began to provide students and the greater Marquette community a beautiful place to watch, study, and experience the performing arts. Louis Graveraet Kaufman, a local businessman and philanthropist, gave money to buy the property on which the school is built. He also endowed the school and auditorium with money that would allow the students and community the opportunity to experience “….some of the finer things in life.”

Thanks to the endowment, the Kaufman Auditorium Lyceum Performing Arts Series was started and musicians and lecturers from around the world came to wow the students and community. Today, the Grandchildren of Louis Graveraet Kaufman still contribute to the Lyceum Series as well as give out academic and performing arts scholarships to students at the top of their Eighth Grade and Senior classes each year. A recent contribution by the Kaufman Endowment Fund for the renovation of the stage floor, new curtains, and a new lighting system was greatly appreciated and is helping make Kaufman Auditorium the Premiere Venue for the Performing Arts!
